Infobox suggestion[edit]

Wouldn't it be nice if we had an infobox in each eras merch page, so we could navigate between them? MindBoosterNoori (talk) 11:55, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

i'm not sure because of two reasons:
  1. i have no idea what we would put into infoboxes except the navigation like we do for tour dates
  2. the gallery template we use to simplify wiki markup seems to generate tabular galleries with layout that most likely we cannot change even with CSS (or i'm wrong for this aspect). this is very similar to what we have for tour dates in desktop version: even a horizontal ruler or headings get underneath the infobox leaving much space to the left if we don't have any content there (however, little content like lists of lineups or setlists can fill the empty space)
maybe we can add the navigation bar to navigate through adjacent galleries like we already have for Instagram posts split by year? nothing (talk) 12:11, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
A navbar would work! MindBoosterNoori (talk) 12:17, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
maybe we can consider two versions: 13 in row or 1-6-6 (the latter i guess would be best to put to the bottom because of its height). i guess neither would work for the mobile version though nothing (talk) 12:53, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
i don't have any more ideas on that. if you have comments or ideas, please share nothing (talk) 12:57, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
I like the second option for the footer of the pages (perhaps preceding it with a sort of header, or putting it in a box, like wikipedia's navboxes? See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Marilyn_Manson as an example of what I mean). As for how to see it on mobile, I think we could change both the gallery and the navbox to have less items per row (three instead of four on the gallery, five instead of six in the navbox), that should do it? - MindBoosterNoori (talk) 15:19, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
not really. the gallery currently only supports flexible content model where the number of images in each row is calculated automaticaly based on each image width in total, and each row image count is effectively undefined. this is really helpful in many cases like mobile views, or images of the similar dimenstions ratio. but sometimes it also makes ugly galleries if images are mixed by significant height:width or width:height ratio. this is why i would like keep the gallery layout as is, at least for now. regarding the navbox, i think we merely cannot the merch items them by groups just because they all are just merch, actually a very specific section of the wiki which doesn't seem to be grouped with any other pages. perhaps, i would suggest this:
  1. make it a navbar, not a navbox with header
  2. as a visual divider let's just use a horizontal rule. it wouldn't look heavy, but still being able to divide they galleries and the navbar. also, we can add a padding or margin to the top of the navbar, so that the sections could be distinguished easier
  3. for the navbar, replace the current implementation using wiki tables to something flexible like what galleries use. tables are indeed easier to use (like what the merchandise index page use), but require special implementations for mobile views, and the wiki suffers from it for ages, i know
  4. accent the current era image similarly to how it's accented at the merchandise index page
  5. put them at the very bottom of each page similarly to navboxes
in short, it would be something like a navbar with two logical rows: the upper "row" would merely hold the current era single image/link, always centered regardless if desktop or mobile; the bottom "row" would be flexible, and let browser arrange the number of images/links itself (for example, browsers for wide displays/screen or if zoomed out might easily fit all images/links in one physical row, but once the width gets smaller, like zooming in, mobile views, etc, they would sort of "flowing" to fit them all in multiple rows)
this sounds like a compromise for me, but i'm not yet sure how it would really look and feel. let me attempt to implement it first and then test it nothing (talk) 18:51, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

Something like this nothing (talk) 19:14, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

MindBoosterNoori, i'm not sure if the discussion drowned in the massive edits we made today, just pinging you here. what do you think about the navbar version #3? nothing (talk) 11:48, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
Let's put it up! After seeing it in action if we have any ideas on how to make it better, we can iterate later. MindBoosterNoori (talk) 12:31, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
done. i also had to add a horizontal rule to make content and navigation not to merge/mix visually. i'll rework the photo and merchandise galleries as well too because these two are not flexible and are not even scrollable for narrow content views nothing (talk) 12:58, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
looks good! MindBoosterNoori (talk) 13:17, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
