Marilyn Manson Lays Soul Bare!

The Antichrist Superstar has been speaking to Rock Sound about his musical return. 'Eat Me, Drink Me', Marilyn Manson's sixth studio album due to drop in June, is an autobiographical snapshot of the past year of his life, which has seen the break-up of his marriage to burlesque artiste Dita Von Teese, and led to some of the darkest points in his life.

Speaking about the lyrics that directly reference those times, Manson said: "I feel like it makes the record more human without it being forced. It's telling the listeners that I'm normal by any stretch of the imagination and being honest in a way that I've never been comfortable being: it's essentially stuff that I'd write in my diary if I kept one religiously. It's the most sexual an relationship-orientated record and also my darkest record without a doubt."

Together with the change in lyrical style, the Antichrist Superstar, more renowned for revealing himself in public in other ways, has stripped his vocals bare. "I felt like I needed a place to excel." he said, "and it wasn't just writing my feelings and being innovative with what I was writing about, it was also the delivery as a singer, and I feel that's where I succeeded the most."

Song titles include 'If I Was Your Vampire', 'Red Carpet Grave' and 'Putting Holes in Happiness', and Manson's chuffed with people's early receptions so far. "People have responded that it's very raw - not in the obvious technical sense, but in every bit of the intent," he said. "For the most part, every song was written the same day it was sung; the melody was invented in the initial singing of it and that take was what we recorded. It's some of the best stuff I've done in my whole life."
